Plip Plop Plinth
You just never know what you’re going to see when you’re driving around NYC. In a quest to diversity my sources of joy, I went to Greenwich Village to hear the World Famous Harlem Gospel Choir at the famous Blue Note Jazz Club. The concern was great fun – a veritable sing-along with the amazing singers from Harlem.
After the rejuvenating sing-along, I went back to my car to wend my way across the city, back to the quiet tranquility of New Jersey. On the way, I was sitting under the High Line on 10th, and looked up to see this magnificent, giant-ass pigeon sitting there staring at me.
A little research reveals that it is a 16 foot tall, hyper-realistic sculpture made by artist Ivan Argote, and he perches atop the Tenth Avenue plinth on the city’s famed High Line. He is made of aluminum and weighs 2000 lbs. Can you imagine the poop that bird would have? It would be bucketsful of white, sticky plip-plop action all over the plinth. Oh wait – that’s already there! Who knew an aluminum bird could plip-plop? . PLIP PLOP PLINTH! A new band name! It would be grunge music, I’m sure. Maybe folk.
All around the City, there are remarkable sights – old churches nestled in next to brand new, billion dollar buildings. Graffiti, enormous piles of garbage, food trucks, sculptures, a 100 foot pink Elmo statues, fountains, pop-up stores, delivery trucks, but none of those were half as interesting as that pigeon.
However, not even the sight of this enormous, looming pigeon can be more exciting than the other morning with Arthur. He is now finally convinced that I’m probably not going to eat him alive, and once the performances of “you’ve abandoned me!!” are complete, he and I settle into a wonderful routine of playing, reading books, listening to classical music, and being silly. He watched his first 5 minutes of a Phonics video the other day. Having had zero screen-time until now, it was interesting to see his reaction. He was transfixed, and very attentive. He smiled, and his eyes watched every movement on the screen. It was fascinating.
Can’t wait to see who you turn out to be, little guy! We have many, many fun adventures ahead!
