Safety Glass, Earthquake, Blimp, Solar Eclipse

Yes, this may seem like one of the head-scratching puzzles in the NY Times which asks, “What do all of these words have in common?” I hate to tell you, but unless you live my life, you’d never realize the sequence of events that strings them all together.

The other night – April Fool’s Day, to be exact, I was sitting quietly in my home sipping some tea and watching American Idol.  It was 10:36 pm when I heard a huge crash, and then a wave of tinkling sounds as a million pieces of glass started falling from whatever had broken.  I looked out my window – everything was intact. I checked the TV – all good, Then I realized that for abs, olutely no reason in the world, my glass desk had decided to explode.  Suddenly.  Like out of nowhere.  And a million little squares of safety glass had now embedded themselves in my soft, white, plush rug!

I considered doing something about it, but I left it alone, because I realized I was in no way equipped to deal with it, and went to bed.  The next day I was in NYC, and came home tired.  I attempted to vacuum it up with my wimpy vacuum because my daughter was flying in the next day, and my mother would never approve of me leaving broken glass around (even though I live alone).

Sadly, my wimpy vacuum didn’t do diddly, so the next morning, I picked up my daughter from the airport, and our first stop was to buy a shop vac. We returned to my house and sucked up all the glass, and all was well.

Then, on the 5th of April, my daughter and I were sitting here enjoying some coffee when the earth shook.  We looked at each other and wondered if it was a plane landing in the Hudson, a helicopter buzzing the building, or an actual earthquake! Turns out, it was the latter – and BOY do peeps on this coast overreact to an earthquake!  But all was well, nothing fell down.

This morning, which is April 8, I was working away when I looked out over NYC and saw a blimp!  I know this may not rank in the drama of the other happenings, but I’d never seen a blimp in my life.  They are freaking huge and it went right over the top of my apartment!

That would have been plenty of excitement, but the grand finale was the solar eclipse that happened this afternoon.  Not quite as dramatic as the photos from Texas, but an eerie occurrence nonetheless.  The sudden shift from blue and sunny to dark as night and back again is definitely a little off-putting.

Just for fun, I’ll add in the guy in NYC the other morning who was double-fisting a water bottle and a vodka bottle whilst strolling along. There was also an alien-type being wandering down the street (but that’s hardly worth mentioning). We saw 2 cruise ships depart, and the geese have flocked back to the Harbor. All in all, I would say it has been a raucous week so far – I’m braced and somewhat gingerly anticipating what adventures are next!
